Politics, Escape Plan

I'm guessing there are few (if any) who have stuck with this thread to the end. But, if you have, and if you are more likely than me to suffer should the White Nationalists manage to pull off a minoritarian victory, you might want to watch this space.

If I do have to activate my escape plan, I'd like to make sure you all get to come with me…

No. My reasoning is more:

* It still makes sense economically

* If I have to live in a failed state, I'd rather it wasn't one I used to love

* I can blaze a trail for those less fortunate

Over the next three years I will revive my 2016 escape plan and update it as needed. I will support those who want to save my country. And I will carefully watch attempts to restrict or control voting in conservative states, using that as the bellwether for a right-wing coup.

Caveats: this is my opinion only AND there remains a possibility the GOP will recover from their current insanity AND even if they do try to game the 2024 presidential election they are quite likely to fail.

But they might also succeed.

And that means I need to once again consider an escape plan. Not because I am worried about myself, after all I'm an older white het/cis male with no influence. When the Jack-Booted Thugs are loosed, they won't come after me.

So, today we look ahead to 2024 with trepidation. In my own case I'm not so much worried about Trump running again himself as I am worried the far-right will use the playbook Trump designed to usurp the Presidency for whichever authoritarian the GOP ends up nominating.

Because (a) the GOP will nominate an authoritarian and (b) they will try to stack the deck to win. Even if it means Republican state legislatures overruling the popular vote in certain states.

It's now 2021 and Trump is no longer in power. However, it's also clear he has deeply damaged US politics; perhaps irrecoverably.

All political systems are flawed, because they are made out of people and people are flawed. However, you can paper over the flaws with norms and culture and things continue to lurch ahead in an acceptable fashion.

Yet Trump showed the GOP two things:

1. Norms can be broken

2. White Nationalism remains a powerful force in US politics

As part of that research I narrowed down the possible destinations and even spent nearly two months in my top choice; to get a feel for living there.

Afterwards I seriously considered moving to either Costa Rica or Ecuador, because my available resources would allow me to live quite well in either place – not because I was afraid of what Trump could do to my own country.

In the end I stayed here, but for family reasons unrelated to either motivation for leaving.

Politics, Always Have an Escape Plan

After Trump won the election in 2016 I seriously considered moving out of the US. Yes, part of it WAS Trump and a sneaking fear he would bring democracy crashing down in order to retain power – a fear that ultimately proved both precognitive and, at least for 2020, an overestimate of Trump's ability to harm the Republic.

But another part was something I discovered while researching how to be an ex-pat: namely it could actually improve my lifestyle.

Since I've been living up here in the mountains I've never ONCE had a trick-or-treater show up at my door. Hell, I don't get many visitors at all really, which is fine by me.

Despite this, the first few years I was here I carved a pumpkin or two. Then I stopped.

Should I carve one this year, even if I'm the only one who ever sees it?

I've said, for a while now, Bitcoin's one legitimate use case is moving money out of counties with strict currency controls. Meaning, basically, China…

Turns out? The Chinese government, already dealing with a currency and debt crisis, agrees.

Poltics, Who defines 'RINO'?

Update: Adam Kinzinger speaks out…

> "This is how far the Republican Party has fallen. They call me a RINO … but I haven’t changed. The Republican Party has changed into an authoritarian Trump organization. They’re the RINOs. Trump is a RINO.”

> Adam Kinzinger: Republicans Are ‘Frigging Crazy’. The Illinois representative thought the GOP was filled with democracy-loving internationalists. Now he sees the party as a corrupt shell of itself. theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar

Of course, those results are in the fine print…

> "The draft reports reviewed by The Republic minimize the ballot counts and election results and instead focus on issues that raise questions about the election process and voter integrity."

Of course the real experts are saying, "… those findings are misleading and built on faulty data."

Also, of course, none of this will stop other states from performing similar sham 'audits'.

> "The three-volume report by the Cyber Ninjas, the Senate’s lead contractor, includes results that show Trump lost by a wider margin than the county’s official election results."

In case you missed it? Let me repeat with emphasis: "TRUMP LOST BY A WIDER MARGIN THAN THE COUNTY'S OFFICIAL ELECTION RESULTS."

Hahahahahahahahaha!

Update: Looks like I'll be coming back to this project later. The wire I was going to use is the wrong gauge for safety.

I guess I'll be driving down below to buy some more supplies instead.

I guess the moral is: Don't trust an electrician who ISN'T nervous as hell when playing with 220 volts at 50 amps.

Playing with two-lug 220v current today. (Wiring in an RV receptacle.)

This kind of thing makes me nervous as hell. It doesn't help that the last time I did this a pair of actual certified electricians (my daughter and a friend) helped me – and they were nervous as hell.

And this time I'm doing it on my own…

My dog's vet just sent me an email suggesting ways I can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with her.

Reaching much? I mean, I've got no problem with Hispanic Heritage Month, but this is just silly!

After all, she's a Siberian Husky. Wrong breed entirely!

Poltics, Who defines 'RINO'?

Update: Really, they did this to themselves. And they are still doing it…

Will the last sane and principled Republican to leave the party please turn out the lights?

> Why Sane Republicans Are Purging Themselves. It looks like they’re giving up, but for politicians like Anthony Gonzalez, a party run by Trump is not worth fighting for. politico.com/news/magazine/202
