Everyone is probably familiar with the fact the ancient Greeks and Romans often complained about young people in the exact same way our parents complained about us and we complained about the next generation. "No respect for elders or tradition," that kind of thing.
Well, here's another one for the, 'Things change, but always stay the same,' file – surviving letters and records of court cases show the Romans spent a LOT of time complaining about contractors, especially plumbers!
And the complaints would not be out of place today. Things like not showing up when promised, doing a bad job and promising to complete the work later, leaving tools (and slaves) around the house, that kind of thing.
(I'm not aware of anyone complaining about 'plumber butt', but back then the problem would be reversed because most of them wore tunics that would ride UP instead of DOWN.)
And, FWIW? Even the better Roman plumbing sucked pretty badly.
Basically we've got it pretty good today, compared to the Romans' everyday life.
