Trump, Tariffs

If someone tells you Trump's tariffs are being paid by China, that is the only clue you need to know they (a) have no clue what tariffs actually are and/or (b) have no clue about microeconomics and pricing signals.

Regarding (b): if US consumer prices on Chinese goods rise due to tariffs, substituting goods from other countries means those countries can raise their prices to just under Chinese prices plus tariffs. Substituting US-made goods? Sorry, no US manufacturers are playing.
